Letter from

July 29, 2005

Dear friends in Christ,

Hope springs eternal from the Word of God, though institutions and the people leading them may disturb, disappoint or even dissuade us from the simple promises of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. photo of Jaynan Clark EglandWe believe with Professors Benne and Nestingen that there is hope for ELCA churches and members to work together on behalf of the Gospel. In an association of churches, ELCA members can take a public stand on the authority of God’s Word over against the disturbing trends within the ELCA. photo of Pastor Mark ChavezThey can also work together to be about the proper mission of the Church—proclaim Jesus Christ and his gospel, and make disciples according to his own great commission to do so. This is above all else a matter of being faithful servants of Jesus Christ.

Many churches, groups and individuals within the ELCA have expressed the need for some kind of an association of confessing churches. The WordAlone Network has been in discussion with many of them. The WordAlone annual convention this year decided to begin the formation of an association for ELCA churches that are concerned that the ELCA churchwide organization might take action which is contrary to the Scriptures and further lead to the decline of overall mission in the ELCA.

The enclosed brochure explains how churches may join the association and the process by which representatives from churches will begin to organize the association. The important dates for you to note are November 6-8, 2005 when there will be a meeting at Brooklyn Park Lutheran Church, Brooklyn Park, Minn. to take the next steps in organizing the association. All churches may send representatives to participate in the discussion at the November meeting, but if your church would like to send representatives with voice and vote, then you will need to consider joining the emerging association by agreeing to The Common Confession.

If your church decides to join the association, then send a notice of your church’s action on church letterhead to the WordAlone office. If at any point you have questions about the association or the process for joining or forming it, please call the WordAlone office. The recent solemn warnings from prominent theologians in the ELCA are sobering. None of us have wanted to believe that the situation inside the ELCA is that grave. Yet warning signs are a blessing. They can help us steer clear of dangerous paths and choose those that are more hopeful. Please give prayerful consideration to the association, and pray for ELCA churches and members. All of us in the ELCA face serious matters and decisions. Therefore, let us join together in prayer that in all we do and decide, we will always give glory to God and proclaim his Son as the one and only Lord and Savior.

Your servants in Christ,

Jaynan Clark Egland, President, WordAlone Network

Mark Chavez, Director, WordAlone Network
