WordAlone
Chaplain Corps

Stained-glass window depicting Jesus and sheep WordAlone's Chaplain Corps, launched January 2010, is program of WordAlone through which pastors and laypersons alike may seek advice and counsel as regards the fallout from the positions taken by the ELCA pursuant to the church-wide assembly of that body held in August, 2009.

The Chaplain Corps consists of volunteer active and retired pastors and bishops from around the United States who have considerable experience and wisdom in a wide variety of church-related affairs.

The ELCA’s positions have caused a ground-swell of dissent and brought much discomfort to the pews (and not just a few pulpits). There are growing numbers of both pastors and laypersons, from literally all over the globe, being forced to accept policies with which they vehemently disagree. The result is churches divided between pastor and congregation, and congregation members amongst themselves. Many have even felt the need to leave their congregations in search of new church-homes.

The questions arising from all of this are numerous, and diverse. These questions come from clergy and laity alike. They cover a wide area of topics but none so prominent as "What do we do?" and "Where do we go from here?"

The WordAlone Chaplain Corps is created specifically to deal with the foregoing. These volunteer chaplains have amassed varied and wide experience in conflict-resolution, church politics, interim ministry, church finances, to name but a few. The ELCA and its predecessors have had conflicts and schisms before and many of our volunteer chaplains have "weathered these storms" through which they have gained good insight and wisdom. To avail yourself of the services offered through this program, simply click the link below to the Chaplain's Availability Page where you will find a table listing our Chaplain-volunteers and information on how to contact them. These chaplains are ready to provide good counsel and prayer with which to aid your discernment process.

Chaplain's Resource Book

The "hard-copy" version of this booklet is being readied for distribution and should be done soon. In the meantime, the PDF version is available for immediate download.

The verbiage on the back cover reads, “This booklet contains information and resources for those who are serving as part of the WordAlone Network Chaplain Corps — providing counsel, encouragement, and guidance to those who seek to remain faithful to Christ, despite the changes taking place in the larger church.”

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day and having done everything to stand firm. (Ephesians 6:13)
